Approaches When You Don't Have a VNA
| Method | Accuracy | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer S-parameter files | Good (typical unit) | Standard components from major vendors |
| Datasheet impedance specs | Approximate | Quick first estimate |
| NanoVNA (~$50) | Moderate (to ~1.5 GHz) | Cost-sensitive designs, up to UHF |
| EMF simulation (HFSS, CST) | Very good | PCB antennas, custom structures |
| Iterative PCB component tuning | Depends on iteration | When measurement is available after build |
Method 1: Use Manufacturer S2P Files
- Download the component .s2p file from manufacturer's website
- Load into RF View → view S11 or S22 at design frequency
- Auto Match → synthesize L-network from the manufacturer's data
- This gives a very good first-pass design that's close to optimal
- Minor tuning on PCB with ±1 component value adjustment usually suffices
Method 2: Estimate from Datasheet Impedance
Datasheet says: "Input impedance: 25 − j20 Ω at 900 MHz" Enter into RF View S11→Z calculator (reverse): compute Γ → S11 Or: use RF View L-Network Calculator with R_source=50Ω, R_load=25Ω Note: Datasheet impedance is typical, not guaranteed → add margin
Method 3: NanoVNA (Sub-$100 Solution)
For designs below ~1.5 GHz, the NanoVNA is a viable low-cost VNA alternative. It exports .s1p/.s2p files via a companion app. Transfer to Android and open in RF View for full analysis:
- NanoVNA V2+ calibrated: S11 accuracy ±0.5–1.0 dB to 3 GHz
- NanoVNA Original: good to 900 MHz, marginal to 1.5 GHz
- NanoVNA-F V2: usable to 3 GHz with care
Method 4: Iterative PCB Tuning
Start with RF View simulation using manufacturer .s2p: 1. Note nominal L and C values from simulation 2. Place standard values on PCB (0Ω jumpers where you might add/remove) 3. Measure VSWR with simple directional coupler + power meter 4. Adjust one component at a time: ±1 standard value step 5. Converge to best match without a full VNA
RF View Without VNA: Download manufacturer .s2p files → load into RF View → Auto Match → get matching network values. More accurate than manual calculation. Free on Android.
