How to Read an RF Filter Specification Sheet

Interpret RF filter specification sheets: understand passband, stopband, insertion loss, return loss, shape factor, group delay, power handling, and temperature specifications.

Parsing a Typical LTE SAW Filter Spec

  SFECF1G8CB0A0A (Murata LTE Band 3 RX SAW Filter):
  Passband: 1805–1880 MHz (f_pass = 1843 MHz center)
  Insertion Loss (max): 2.5 dB at 25°C
  Insertion Loss (typ): 1.8 dB
  Return Loss (min): 10 dB → verify RL > 14 dB in your design margin
  Group Delay Ripple (max): 100 ns across passband

  Stopband rejection:
  At 1710–1785 MHz (LTE Band 3 TX): >50 dB (typ 52 dB)
  At 2110–2170 MHz: >45 dB

  Power handling (max CW): 29 dBm (0.8W) → PA must be downstream
  ESD: HBM 500V class (handle with care, ESD strap required)
  Operating temperature: −40 to +85°C

Temperature Spec Interpretation

  "Insertion Loss Drift over −40 to +85°C: ≤ ±0.5 dB"
  → IL stays within 1.8 ± 0.5 dB = 1.3 to 2.3 dB over full temperature range

  "Center frequency drift: ≤ ±10 MHz over temperature"
  → f₀ stays within 1843 ± 10 MHz = 1833 to 1853 MHz
  → Must verify all specs at both band edges under worst-case temp shift

How to Use the Spec with RF View

  1. Download .s2p from Murata SimSurfing (matches "Typical" specs in datasheet)
  2. Load into RF View → BW Marker → read actual f₀, IL, BW
  3. Compare markers with specification: S21 should be within spec
  4. Request worst-case .s2p (corner models) if available for Monte Carlo
RF View: Download manufacturer .s2p file and verify all filter specifications with RF View markers. BW Marker automatically reads f₀, IL, and bandwidth. Marker at stopband frequency reads rejection. Free on Android.
